Rueben F. Winkie
Rueben F. Winkie, son of Fred and Mary Ludeking Winkie, was born Oct. 1, 1909 on his parents' farm in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon. He died Oct. 8, 1993 at his home in Waukon. He was 84.
He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian. He attended the #5 rural school in Ludlow. He married Viola Duvel at her parents' home in Ludlow on Nov. 14, 1935.
He farmed 42 years in Ludlow on the farm that had been in his family for over 100 years. Following moving to Waukon in 1977, he did some carpentry work. He occasionally liked to fish and enjoyed his life of retirement. He was an active member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where he was ordained a deacon and trustee, as well as serving on the cemetery committee.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Mattie Becker and Esther Kruger. Survivors include his wife, Viola Winkie, a son, Gary Winkie and wife Marlene, of Rockford, Ill.; a son, Dennis Winkie, of Marion; a brother, Ben Winkie of Waukon; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct 12, 1993 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, the Rev. James Walker officiating. Casket bearers were Richard Winkie, Neil Becker, Merlin Kruger, Duane Duvel, Doug Winkie, Ricke Winkie and Virgil Duvel. Arrangements were by Martin Funeral Home, Waukon.
