Ernest "Ernie" Milton Bjerke

April 13, 1919 - March 9, 2007

Ernest "Ernie" M. Bjerke, 87, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, March 9, 2007 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 13th at 11:00 am at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Ernest Milton Bjerke was born April 13, 1919 in rural Waterville the son of Eilert and Martha (Busness) Bjerke. He was baptized and confirmed at East Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church and attended Waterville Elementary School. Ernie worked at various jobs when he finished school. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 during WWII.

On December 18, 1946 he married Lorna Grotegut in rural Waukon. They farmed together in Frankville Township and he also did carpentry work for several years. Ernie was a member of Salem United Church of Christ. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, traveling and taking care of his pets, lawn and garden. His most favorite times were spent with family.

Survivors include his wife Lorna of Waukon; 4 daughters, Janice and Linda Bjerke both of Decorah, IA, Julie (Gene) Curtis of Marion, IA and Kristi (Mitchell) Davis of Waukon; 6 grandchildren, Kristen Colleen and Paul Curtis, Wallace, Andrew and Joshua Davis; 2 great-grandchildren, Nolan Temple and Ashley Curtis; and a brother, Ordell (Virginia) Bjerke of Waukon. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Casketbearers are Steve Grotegut, Bob Bjerke, Don Drenth, Tom Regan, Chad Ness and Dan Becker.
