Jeanne Frances Rooney was born on July 19, 1922 in the Lycurgus area of rural Church, IA. Her parents were Peter E. and Mary (Whalen) Welch. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church where she remained a life-long member. Jeanne attended the rural French Creek #3 elementary school and graduated from the normal training curriculum at Waukon High School. She taught school where she attended, at French Creek #3 for couple of terms.
In 1942 she married James McMorrow. When James was killed in an accident while serving in the military in 1944, she returned home to help her father with the farm and to tend to her younger siblings, since her mother had died when Jeanne was 9 years old.
On January 15, 1949 she married Cletus Gregory Rooney at St. Mary's Lycurgus. Jeanne was a dedicated and busy mother, raising their six children as well as working side by side with Cletus on the farm. They moved to Waukon in 1978 where she began as a volunteer, but soon began working at TASC, a job she truly loved. She retired in 1990.
Throughout her life she was a loyal and faithful member of St. Mary's Lycurgus Parish, serving as director of the CCD program as well as being involved in all of the women's organizations. She was also a volunteer in the local Al-Anon program. Jeanne enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and houseplants, playing cards, and she loved going dancing with Cletus. She was a very caring and community oriented person, often being the first to arrive when someone needed help. Her passion remained her family, and being together with them or preparing their favorite comfort foods were the times she loved most.
Survivors include her husband, Cletus of Waukon; 5 children, Sheryl (Jerry) Hammel of Denver, IA, Tim Rooney of Portland, OR, Tom (Susan) Rooney of Woodbury, MN, Diane (Paul Remington) Rooney of Cedar Rapids, and K.C. Rooney of Temecula, CA; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer, Sarah, Christopher and Megan; 2 great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Nathan; and a brother, Donald Welch of Santa Monica, CA. She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Lyn Rooney; 3 brothers, Kenneth "Bud", Norbert and Cletus Welch; and 4 sisters, Mary "Sis" Fink, Rita Dornan, Agnes Thorpe and Julia Ann Welch.
Casketbearers are Ralph Welch, Mike Farley, Jim Gallagher, Jerry Hammel, Paul Remington and Chris Rooney. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund.
