Funeral services for Mrs. Seward Swenson, 72 were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:15 from the home to Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethern Church, at 1:30 with Rev. A. W. Ebert, assisted by Rev. Curtis Webster of Forest Mills, officiating. Burial was in Oakland cemetery in Waukon.
Mrs. Swenson died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 17, at 5:30p.m. at the University Hospital in Iowa City from a heart attack, She had been ill since July 1.
As Lucy Mary she was born June 25 1887 at Elkport, Iowa, the eldest daughter of John Preston Gilson and Elizabeth, nee Segrist Gilson, at an early age she moved with her parents to a farm in Allamakee county, where she received her education in the rural schools of the vicinity in which she lived.
She was married to Seward L. Swenson Aug. 11 1903 in Post township, Allamakee County. They established their home in Allamakee county and in later years retired to Monona. Mr and Mrs. Swenson were privileged to observe their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary, Aug. 11, 1959. Mrs. Swenson was an active member of the Evangelical United Brethern Church at Forest Mills for many years until moving to Monona when she transferred her membership to the Monona church.
She loved her home and was always happy to have her family and friends around her, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren who were a joy to her at all times.
Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister, Mrs. Anton Kolden of Waukon. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Swenson is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Chet (Ethel) Barr of Blue Earth, Minn. Mrs. Roy (Pearl) Honn of Luana, Mrs. H. C. (Grace) Hayes of Lone Tree, and Mrs. Mabel Pearson and Mrs. Julius (Mildred) Johnson of Monona, two sons Lloyd of Waukon and Harley of Marengo, one sister Mrs. Reva Steiber of Waukon, four brothers, Albert, John, and Orrie Gilson of Waukon, and Fred Gilson of Des Moines, and aunt Mrs. Lucy Roffman of Waukon, an uncle Peter Purman of Elkport and 21 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Music at the services was provided by Mrs. Justus Kammerer and Jackson Turner, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "No Night There," and "Nearer My God to Thee." Mrs. A. W. Ebert was the organist. Honorarary pallbearers were: Dave Kammerer, Robert Ferguson, William Marfilius, George Topel, Emil Aulerich and Ralph Leppert. Active casket bearers were: Fritz, Alfred, and John Berg, Harvey Debes, Grover Miller and Lawrence Olson.Great-grandmothers obituary from unknown Waukon newspaper from 1959.
