John "Jack" Sweeney died of natural causes Thursday, September 13, 2002, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing with Msgr. Edward Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in the New Albin City Cemetery. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing assisted with arrangements. John Sweeney was born July 8, 1914, in Lansing, the eldest son of Ben and Alice (Williams) Sweeney.
On July 27, 1935, he married Vivian Krzbietke. They had two children, Gene (Barbara) Sweeney of Houston, Texas, and Faye (Bill) Munchoff of Hudson, Iowa. There are seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Jack was in the CC's, worked on the Alcan Highway, the sawmill in New Albin for his father-in-law, Herman Krzbietke, doing masonry work, and, in later years, for the City of Lansing in the maintenance department. He retired in 1978. At that time he and his wife "Babe" and his best friend Skipper became avid fishermen, spending entire days on the river. He also enjoyed taking his grandchildren when they came to spend time during summer vacation. When great-grandchildren came it was his joy to give them money to go to Horsfalls and have them come back to show him their great purchases. He was a fireman, city policeman, and was on the town council. He was a member of the Lions Club and actively campaigned for the purchase of Lansing's first ambulance. Jack enjoyed league bowling. He also drove many friends to medical appointments. He is survived by his wife, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Robert and Patrick, both of Lansing. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary; his parents; two sisters; and a brother. Active casketbearers were John Rethwisch, Pat Connelly, Jim Gruber, Jerry Seitz, Lloyd Welsh, and Vince Mullarky. Honorary casketbearers were George Lee, George Ferring, Vernon Blietz, Lyle Peters, Ken Hanson, and Charlie Verdon. Organist was Alice Hanson and vocalist was Jeff Charley©Waukon Standard 2002
