Clara D. Smerud, 100, of New Albin, died Thursday, May 10, 1990 at Thornton Manor Care Center, Lansing.
Clara was born January 9, 1890 in French Creek Township, Allamakee County, to George and Christine Catherine (Frank) Wild. Clara's husband, Oscar Smerud, died in 1965.
She was a member of the Allamakee County Historical Society, St. Joseph Altar Society, Catholic Order of Foresters and the VFW Auxiliary, and was a past 4-H leader.
Clara is survived by five sons, Edmund, John, and George of New Albin, Alfred of LaCrosse, WI, and Donald of Waukon; five daughters, Sara Smerud, New Albin, Rosemary Intlekofer, Reno, NY, Evangeline McKenna, Clutier, IA,
Margaretta Keenan, Rawlins, WY, and Clara Louise Baal, Madison, WI; two foster children; 73 grandchildren; 107 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters, and a daughter, Rita Ann Carroll.
Funeral services were held May 12 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, New Albin, Fr. Henry Charipar officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Edmund Smerud, John Smerud, George Smerud, Alfred Smerud, Donald Smerud and David Carroll.
Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home, Lansing, was in charge of arrangments.
