World War Veteran Dies at Des Moines
News was received here Tuesday of the death that morning of Sidney K. Stahl at the Veterans hospital at Des Moines, where he had received care for stomach trouble the past several weeks.
A son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Stahl he was born in Franklin township, April 27, 1897, where he grew to manhood.
On August 11, 1916, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine corps at La Crosse for four years, but was discharged on May 14, 1917, at Portsmouth, N.H., on account of physical disability. On October 3, 1917, he joined the American forces by enlisting here at Waukon in the private medical corps and was sent to Camp Dodge, Des Moines. Later he was transferred to Camp Bowie, Texas, where he received his discharge on December 20, 1918.
Besides his parents of near Rossville he is survived by two children, Kenneth and Bessie who have been reared since the death of their mother several years ago, by their grandmother, Mrs. A. A. Farnham of Waukon. Also four brothers and two sisters, Richard, Cecil, Donald and Owna, all of this vicinity, Mary and Elizabeth who are married and reside at McGregor and Decorah respectively.
The remains arrived here Wednesday and were taken to the Pluemer & Bakke chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Robert Davies, followed by burial with Military honors in Evergreen cemetery, Jefferson Township.
