John C. Evans Died in La Crosse
John C. Evans, 62, owner-operator of the Evans Cartage company of La Crosse, Wis., died in a La Crosse hospital Monday, September 9. He was born in Forrest Mills in Allamakee county January 22, 1901, and founded the cartage firm in 1933. He won recognition in La Crosse in 1947 when he sponsored the adoption of a life savings plan for installation of boxes along the river banks of the Mississippi. The boxes contained life preservers and a coil of rope and a ladder.
Mr. Evans was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce, the Badger State Sportsman’s Club, La Crosse Safety Council, Elks Lodge, Wisconsin Carriers, Bureau and the La Crosse Traffic club.
Survivors are his wife, Violet, two sisters, Mrs. Herbert Fink and Mrs. Earl Ralston both of Waukon and one brother, William of Waterloo.
Funeral services were Thursday, September 12, in Trinity United Church, Mormon Coulee Road, with the Rev. S. E. Birkner officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
