Donald G. Kermeen., 83, of Waukon, died Monday, December 6, 2004 at St Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
He was born on August 20, 1921 in Chicago, IL, the son of Glen and Helen (Buntrock) Kermeen. His parents moved a lot when he was young and he lived for a time in Kentucky and Louisiana. They returned to the Chicago area where he attended the Glenwood School for Boys and Chicago Heights High School. After 2 years he worked doing deliveries for an office supply store to help out at home, but later returned to school and graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1941. Following graduation he moved to California where he and his brother Bob worked for Lockheed Aircraft Co. From 1942 until 1945 Don served in the United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine. On September 19, 1944 he married Lillian Mary Fetketter at the French Creek United Methodist Church in rural Lansing. They lived in California until he was discharged from the service and then returned to northeast lowa. From 1946 until moving to Waukon in 1999, Don and Lillian farmed in the French Creek area, operating a dairy and raising livestock and crops.
Don was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, the NFO, and the American Legion. He was an accomplished woodworker and carver and enjoycd bowling, fishing and hunting. In recent years he has also enjoyed spending time with friends playing golf and cards.
Survivors include 2 children, Pam (Fred) Onsgard and Gary (Ellen) Kermeen, both of Spring Grove; 3 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Mildred) Kermeen of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; and a brother-in-law, Charles (Delores) Fetketter of Eitzen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lillian, who died in January of 2004, and a brother, William.
Services were held Thursday, December 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Steve Campbell officiating. Burial with graveside military rites was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing. Friends called from 4:00 to 6:30 pm Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.The Caledonia Argus 13 Dec 2004
