Lyle Gene McKenzie, 72, of Spring Grove, died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at his home of Acute Leukemia. He was born March 5, 1931, in Millboro, SD, to Charles and Mona (Schwab) McKenzie. He graduated from Colome, SD. On October 16, 1960, he married Nancy Wells at Keota, IA. The couple lived in Lansing, IA, Waukon, IA and they farmed in Mabel before moving to Spring Grove where they have lived for the last 25 years.
Lyle was the last full time depot agent in Waukon and the last depot agent in Caledonia for the Milwaukee Railroad for 15 years. He was in the United States Navy for four years on the Battleship Iowa as a radio operator in the Korean War. He was in seven summer musicals with Spring Grove’s Ye Olde Opera House Theater. Lyle had a great love of children and friends and especially his Christian faith. He was Spring Grove’s 2003 Honorary Norwegian at their annual Syttende Mai Fest, had also worked part time at Cenex for several years, and was a member of Christ Community Free Church in New Albin, IA.
Survivor’s include his wife, Nancy of Spring Grove; a son, Roger (Carla) McKenzie, Ogden, UT; a daughter, Connie McKenzie, Rochester; three grandchildren; and special family friends, Randy, Lorie, Desiree, Crystal and Tyler Wohlert.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 siblings.
Services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 1 p.m. at Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Spring Grove. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Roble Funeral Service of Spring Grove is in charge of arrangements.
