Elmer A. Heitman, 79, of New Albin died Friday, March 16, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Care Center, Waukon, IA. He was born January 29, 1922 in Union City township, rural New Albin, to Paul and Mary (Pohlman) Heitman. Elmer was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s U.C.C. Wheatland and he also attended rural schools in Wheatland. On June 9, 1950 he married Gladys Meyer and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this last year.
Elmer dairy farmed on his family farm until 1983 when he retired, though he continued to help out for many years. He also was active in the community he lived. Elmer was a life-long member of St. John’s U.C.C., Wheatland, where he served as council president. He also was a 4-H leader for over 30 years. Elmer served for 16 years on the Farm Service Company Board of Directors, 20 years on the German Farmers Mutual Insurance Board of Directors, and 9 years on the Tri-State Breeders Cooperative Board of Directors.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys of New Albin; three daughters: Carolyn (Duane) Aitchison of Albert Lea, Darlene (David) Eggum of La Crosse, WI, and Lori (Kurk Kuehl) of La Crosse; three sons: Alan (Lori) of New Albin, Garland (Jean) of Peoria, IL, and David (Janette) of Dorchester, IA; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters: Gladys Tegtmeier of Caledonia, and Dolores Brumm of Eitzen; and many cousins, relatives, and friends.
Elmer was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Walter Tegtmeier and Donald Brumm.
Services were Monday, March 19 at 11 am at St. John’s United Church of Christ with the Rev. Paul Burgess officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Friends called at the New Albin Townhouse and Chapel on Sunday from 5-8 pm with a prayer service at 7:30 pm and at the church on Monday from 10 am until the time of service.
