Kelly J. Deeney, 36, of New Albin, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Albin.
Kelly Jane Smerud Deeney was born June 13, 1970 in Cresco, the daughter of Ronald Smerud and Sandy Ellefson. She moved to Waukon at the age of two. After attending Waukon High School, Kelly enrolled in the Construction Management program at NICC in Calmar. She later worked with her father Ron at Smerud Construction in Lansing, doing a variety of things from bookwork to custom cabinet construction.
September 3, 2005 Kelly and Charles Deeney were married in a ceremony at Mt. Hosmer in Lansing. Just this past fall she had returned to NICC, where she was studying to be a nurse.
Canoeing, boating, riding motorcycles and bass fishing were some of Kelly's more active hobbies. She also enjoyed playing cards, fixing things around the house, and recently had developed an interest in collecting and trading antiques. Kelly liked to help people, loved to spend time with young children, and took wonderful care of her two pet dogs.
Kelly is survived by her husband Charles Deeney of New Albin; three children, Jeremy and Joshua Waters of Waukon and Kayla Waters of New Albin; her mother, Sandy (Bob) McCoy of Waukon; her father, Ronald (Roxanne) Smerud of Lansing; her maternal grandmother, Junice Bolsinger of Lansing; and two step-brothers, Logan and Nick Smerud of Lansing.
She is preceded in death by infant children Justin and Jessica Waters, and her paternal grandparents, George and Betty Smerud.
Casketbearers were Raymond Ellefson, David Smerud and James, Joseph, John and Matthew Deeney. Honorary casketbearers were Logan and Nick Smerud and Charles and Richard Ellefson.
