Margaret Marsh, 92, Postville

Margaret Marsh, 92. of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, died Tuesday, Aug. 29. Funeral services were Sept. 2 at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. The Reverend Gary Catterson officiated. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Lucille (Backhaus) Marsh was born Sept. 20, 1913, to August G. and Emma (Meier) Backhaus, on a farm near Garnavillo. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo and graduated from the Garnavillo High School. She attended Iowa State University for three years and part of the fourth year, and then began teaching in the Garnavillo country school system from 1934 to 1935.

On June 29, 1935 Margaret married Cassius "Carl" Oliver Marsh in Garnavillo. From 1935 to 1936 Carl and Margaret ran a grocery store in Dubuque. They began farming in 1936 in the Ostrander, Minn. area, until 1945. From 1945 until 1969 they farmed near Castalia. Margaret continued to live in their home until August 21, 2006, when she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.

Margaret was devoted to her husband and sons and was a wonderful grandmother. She enjoyed playing bridge and gardening. Her other interests included reading, crocheting, quilting, knitting and crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, the Women's Association, and the Mariner's organization of the Presbyterian Church. She had also been a member of P. E. O. Chapter FT from 1960 to 1995, and had served as president.

She is survived by her three sons, Richard O. (Sylvia) of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; Donald L. (Patricia) of Littleton, Colo.; Leland C. (Sandra) of Castalia; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Scott) Taylor; Landon Marsh; Marissa (Eric) Williams; and Eric, Zachary and Michael Marsh; and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carl, who died Oct. 7, 1996, grandson Scott Marsh, granddaughter Heidi Marsh, a brother, Lorenz and wife, Katherine Backhaus, three sisters, Beatrice and husband Eldo Meyer, Grace and husband Claude Callaghan, and Burnette Backhaus, and a sister-in-law, Marion and husband Gilbert Brown.
