Donald Teff Drowns while Serving Country

Dorchester youth falls from wharf into sea at San Francisco

Donald Teff of Dorchester was another of Allamakee County’s young men to lose his life while serving under the Flag of the USA. Pvt. Teff fell into the sea from a wharf and was drowned while on guard duty at San Francisco, Calif Friday. Private Teff’s duties at the time of the accident were with a patrol guarding against any enemy action or illegal entry onto the West Coast. Because of the weight of his uniform and equipment, he was unable to save himself from drowning.

His remains were recovered from the sea by police and coast guardsmen and were carried by train to Marquette where they were received yesterday morning and brought to Waukon.

Pvt. Teff was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Teff of Dorchester and was born there on February 9, 1922. Most of his life was spent in the home vicinity and on May 12, 1941 he enlisted as a volunteer with the Army and had been stationed at Fort Ord, California.

His father served his country during the 1st World War as a member of the famous “Rainbow” Division and the deceased youth assumed his heritage as an excellent and responsible soldier, fulfilling his duties with the army with willingness and courage and efficiency.

Funeral services with full military honors, were held this Wednesday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Dorchester of which the deceased was a member, the Rev. M. J. Brogan officiated and members of the American Legion, Spanish War Veterans and Auxiliaries from all posts in the county participated in paying high tribute to the memory of the youth.

Pallbearers were: Joe (balance is cut off)
