PASSES ON FEB.18TH
Henry Albert Thornton was born March 20,1862 at Napier,Ontario,Canada,and passed away Sunday afternoon,February 18,1934 at the home of his daughter,Mrs. Harvey Pausch,at the age of 71 years,10 months and 28 days.
In 1864 he came with his parents to Monona,Iowa where his mother departed this life when he was only nine years of age.
February 28,1893,he was united in marriage to Lizzie Heckman of Postville,who passed away November 8,1909.He was the father of ten children,three of whom died in infancy. the children who are left to mourn his departure are Nellie Witt of Ossian,Ethel Shelhamer of Madison,Wisconsin,Wilbur of Elgin,Florence Pausch of Waukon,and Thelma Luebke of Postville and Albert. He leaves fourteen grandchildren. There are also three brothers:Rolly of Tacoma,Washington; Chris of Farmington,Minnesota, and Orlando of Decorah.His sister Laconda Banks of Riceville passed away February 15,1934,three days before his death. His stepmother,Mary B. Thornton; half sister,Bessie M. Kottmeier, and half brother,James R. Thornton of Des Moines also survive him.
With the exception of a business course taken at Toledo,Iowa,he received his education in the rural schools. He had however a desire for knowledge and by home study succeeded in educating himself along many lines.
In early life he joined the United Brethen Church.
Fraternally he was affiliated with the A.O.U. lodge.
He was a kind and loving father and good man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Memorial services were held in the Unite Brethen Church in Postville,Wednesday afternoon,February 21,conducted by his friend and former pastor,Charles F. Schell of Fayette.
The attendance and floral offerings showed the high esteem in which he was held.
Interment was made in Postville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Waters,S.A.Harris,E.E.Owen,Clarence Owen,Will Albright and Chris Schweinefus.
