Cletus Hammell

Cletus Joseph Hammell, 89, of Strawberry Point, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, following a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, June 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Strawberry Point, with Paul R. Peters as Celebrant. Burial with military honors followed at Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point. Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory, Strawberry Point, was in charge of arrangements.

He was born September 4, 1916, in New Albin, Iowa, to Fred and Mathilda (Hoffman) Hammell. He was raised and educated in the area and attended rural schools. He served in the United States Army as a medic during World War II, from 1942 to 1945.

Cletus lived in Scott County for a time where he farmed. He was united in marriage to Margaret Winckler September 30, 1950, in Barton, Wis. Nine children were born to this union. In 1965, they moved to Fayette County, where he farmed near Lamont. In 1974, he retired and moved into Strawberry Point. His wife died February 20, 2004, and Cletus has resided at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester for the past two years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed visiting and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his children, David (Wilma) Hammell of Gays Mills, Wis., Joyce (Bill) Trewin of Denver, Iowa, Diane Hammell of Manchester, Jane Hammell of Cedar Rapids, Gary (Tammy) Hammell of Waukesha, Wis., Ann Hammell of Denver, Colo., and Paul (Diane) Hammell of Marshalltown; a son-in-law, Terry Easton of Merton, Wis.; 13 grandchildren, Chris Hammell and fianceé Lacy Parrish, Eric Hammell and friend Carolyn Boland, Meagan Trewin, Melissa Trewin, Keisha Hammell, Nathan Hammell, Rachel Hammell, Josh Easton and friend Cheri Engelhardt, Jamie Easton and fiance Jeremy Thuemmler, Shannell Lord, Tyler Campbell, Alison Hammell, and Austin Hammell; a great-grandson, Brady Hammell; and a sister, Helen (Milton) Quillin of Eau Claire, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Mary Kay in infancy and Kathy Easton in 2004; a sister, Dorothy DeWulf; and two brothers, Clement and Vincent.

Casketbearers were Josh Easton, Chris Hammell, Eric Hammell, Albert Myrick, Rodney Swales, Nathan Hammell, and Scott Fangman.
