Joseph Cummens 1807 - 1893

CUMMENS, CUMMINS, STILLWELL

Joseph Cummens, the well known old gentleman whose death we recorded last week, was a somewhat remarkable old man. He had been a hard worker all the days of his life, and idleness had no part whatever in his makeup; yet like thousands of others his hard labors were not rewarded sufficiently for him to lay by anything for a "rainy day". For years past while vigorous, strong young men were standing around on the street corners claiming that they could find no work to do, Mr. Cummens always had a job on hand at either sawing wood, making gardens or doing anything else that came in his way, and this was the case right up to his last illness. Aside from the affliction which caused his death he was usually healthy and might have lived for some years yet. As we stated last week he was an inveterate smoker and was almost always pulling away at a strongly charged nicotine pipe, which caused the formation of a cancer in his throat, similar to that which caused the death of General Grant. He was always good natured and ready to "swap" jokes with his friends, young and old. The old gentleman will be remembered for many years to come by our citizens. (Obit was given to me by a relative with no reference as to the newspaper.)
