Eleanor Hammell
Eleanor Marie Hammell, age 80, of New Albin, Iowa, died Monday evening, March 6, 2006, at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia, Minn. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in New Albin. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home of Lansing was in charge of arrangements.
Eleanor was born in rural Lansing, Iowa, July 16, 1925, to Patrick and Louise (Cota) Manning. She grew up in rural Lansing and married Earl Francis Hammell October 29, 1946, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Wexford. They farmed in the New Albin area.
She was a homemaker, taught CCD, and was a member of the Altar/Rosary Society, a homemakers club, and Tops.
Eleanor’s family meant everything to her. She loved to play cards, cook, collect cookbooks, and gardening.
Eleanor is survived by 13 children, Elizabeth “Betty Lou” (Gene) Pohlman of Caledonia, Gerald Hammell of New Albin, Catherine (Tim) Betzle of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Joan (Lyle) Pohlman of Caledonia, Joyce (Paul) Collies of Caledonia, Marion (Charles) Stendel of DeSoto, Wis., Marlene (Loren) Springborn of DeSoto, Rosella (Gayle) Noyes of Homer, Minn., Jerome Hammell of Waukon, Phillip (Olga) Hammell of Spokane, Wash., Ronald Hammell of New Albin, Christina (Mark) Schieber of Caledonia, and Earl Hammell of New Albin; 32 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Mary (George) Hammel of Caledonia, Leo (Mary) Manning of Lansing, and James (Kay) Manning of Lansing; six sisters-in-law; Evelyn Manning of Lansing, Sister Georgia Hammell, FSPA, of La Crosse, Wis., Pauline Blaskowski of Winona, Minn., Esther Walleser of Waukon, Anna Collins of Stillwater, Minn., and Alberta (Joe) Troendle of Lansing; three brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Wilma) Hammell of Denver, Colo., James (Ila) Hammell of Eitzen, Minn., and Leo Mullarkey of Lansing.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Francis Hammell on July 31, 1968; a grandson, Roger Myhre on July 1, 1977, three brothers; Harold, Joe, and George; a sister, Marcella Mullarkey; two sisters-in-law, Marguerite Manning and Dorothy Manning; and three brothers-in-law, Robert Collins, Ernest Blaskowski, and Lawrence “Duke” Walleser.
Casketbearers were Karl Pohlman, Bob Betzle, George Pohlman, Francis Myhre, Charles Stendel, Mark Springborn, Robert Noyes, and Gregory Schieber.
