Dale R. Johnson, 72, of Waukon, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 10 at 1:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial with graveside military rites will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Dale Robert Johnson was born August 1, 1932 in rural Waukon, the son of Oscar and Selma (Wilke) Johnson. He attended Jefferson #8 rural school and then farmed for his brother for a time. From 1952 until 1954 he served as a Corporal in the US Army and saw action in Korea, driving ammunition trucks to the front lines. Following the service he returned to Northeast Iowa where, September 25, 1959 he married Beverly Starkey at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Dale drove trucks most of his working life, for R.J. Cooney for many years and also for Bud Johnson Trucking and the Ludlow Creamery. He enjoyed stock car racing and loved to follow his son Kevin, Jim O'Neill, Virgil Johnson and Dan Jones. He also liked fishing at the Mississippi River and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Dale and Beverly enjoyed music and often attended polka fests where they met many new friends. He also enjoyed listening and dancing to the Toe Tappers. Survivors include his wife Beverly of Waukon; four children, Terry (fiance Deb Knuppe) Johnson and Kevin (Barb) Johnson, both of Waukon, Brenda (Mark) Jones of Harpers Ferry and Belva (fiance Jeff Wemark) Patterson of Decorah; eight grandchildren, Joshua Johnson, Cody Phillips, Bridget Hawes, Leah, Ryan & Jenna Jones, Zachary Kerndt and Makayla Patterson; three step-grandchildren, Kelli, Kannon and Krystal Grotegut; three step-great-grandchildren, Brett Yohe and Brooks & Bailey Mathis; two sisters, Norma Bloxham and Dorothy (Gary) Gress, both of Waukon; five brothers, Roger (Norma) Johnson and Dean (Delores) Johnson, both of Waukon, LaVern (Jeanette) Johnson of Postville, and Keith (Darlene) Johnson and DuWayne (Linda) Johnson, both of Elgin; a step-brother, Morris Neverman of Watertown, WI; and two step-sisters, Ardis Johnson of St. Paul, MN and Wanda Anderson of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sons Jeffery and Greggory; his step-father, Lester Neverman; three sisters, Marnetta Snitker, Delores Berg, and infant Helen Jean Johnson; a brother, Marland "Bud" Johnson; and two step-brothers, Earl and Claire Neverman. Casketbearers were Don Blocker, Jim O'Neill, Harlan Bakken, Clifton Christianson, Dale Keisau and Wes Winters.
