James Deviney (1815-1892) and his wife Margaret Flaherty-Deviney (1814-1894) of County Connaughdt, Ireland, sailed to New York with their young son Thomas about 1850. John their second child was born in New York about 1851. The Deviney family of four, journeyed west to Allamakee County, Iowa. The Deviney’s established a farm in French Creek, before the 1870’s. Thomas and John grew up on the family homestead and learned the value of hard work and the importance of family from their parents.
Their son, Thomas (1846-1926) married Rose Ann Welch (1851-1936) in 1874, Allamakee County. She was the daughter of Peter Welch and Ann Elizabeth Lyons-Welch. Thomas and Rose were the parents of twelve children. Thomas, like his father was engaged in agriculture, owning a farm in Section 28: French Creek. Thomas died of heart failure at eighty years old. Rose passed away ten years later. The Deviney farm was eventually sold in April, 1944 to P. H. Welch. The farm of one hundred forty-five acres sold for $11,700.
John (1851-1923) never married. He owned a farm in French Creek, Section: 28. John died at the age of seventy-three years from cancer.
