Eva May Pettit was born 4 July 1864 in Hardin, Clayton County, Iowa. She died 8 August 1954 in Franklin, Allamakee County, Iowa. She was the daughter of John J. Pettit (1831-1885) and Elizabeth Jane Tibbets (1841-1874).
Eva May married twice in her lifetime. At the age of nineteen, she married her first husband, William James Jones, on 31 March 1883 in Winneshiek County, Iowa. At the time he was in his mid-thirties (1848-1926). He was the son of Franklin Jones and Margaret Johnson. William grew up on his family’s farm in Grand Meadow, Clayton County, Iowa. The couple owned a farm in Franklin, Allamakee County, Iowa. All of their children were born in Allamakee County. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in divorce.
Eva May Pettit and William James Jones were the parents of four children:
Prudence May Jones (1884-1931) married Jess Colvin (1870-1943) in 1902. He was the son of Richard Colvin and Sylvia Elcta Allen. Divorced from Jess, she married Lafayette Ewing (1871-1948) in 1908. Lafayette was the son of Thomas George Ewing and Elizabeth Ann Clark.
Jesse Leroy Jones (1886-1928) married Lucinda Catherine Jones (1889-1926). She was the daughter of William Henry Jones and May Ann Barr.
William Edward Jones (1889-1966) married Wavia Margaret Cain (1889-1956). The daughter of George Cain and Lucy Lova.
Elizabeth Rittie Jones (1890-1962) married Carl Brink (1874-1952). The son of Herman Brink and Hattie Backs. Elizabeth and Carl were divorced. She married for the second time to Charles Louis Brouillet (1889-1964). He was the son of Philias Brouilett and Mary Ann Miller.
Eva May Pettit’s second husband was William Douglas Gould (1864-1951). He was the son of Asa Gould and Cynthia Ellenbolt. Eva and William married 16 February 1921, in Hardin, Clayton County, Iowa. She was fifty-five years old when she remarried. William Gould was engaged in agriculture, farming in Allamakee County. Retiring from farming William and Eva lived in a home in Postville, Allamakee County, Iowa, until their deaths.
Eva died at the age of ninety. She and William are buried at Hardin Cemetery, Allamakee County, Iowa. Her first husband, William James Jones, is buried at Minert Cemetery, Allamakee County, Iowa.
