The death of Mrs. J. B. Gerard, one of the old time Icarian Community women, occurred Friday, December 10, at the home of her son W. E. Gerard of Keystone, S. D. The body was brought back to Corning and the funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Federated church, the services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. C. Miles. Interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery beside her husband who passed away in 1894.

Theodorine Josephine Othello was born in Geneva, Switzerland, May 20, 1838, and was aged 82 years, 6 months and 20 days. She was reared in the land of her birth, and in 1850 came to Nauvoo, Ill., joining the Icarian Community there and where she was married to Jean Batiste Gerard, removing to Corning in 1860, joining the Icarian Community east of this city. For some time Mr. Gerard was president of the organization, but withdrew in 1863, and purchased a farm in Mercer township, which was the home until 1892, when they removed to Corning. In 1910 Mrs. Gerard broke up her home here and went to reside with her sons, eight of whom she had. They are Fred of Fontanelle, Arsene residing south of Nodaway, W. E. of Keystone, S. D., A. J. of Las Vegas, N. M., Peter of Nevada, Mo., Felix of Jasper township, Charles and Theodore of Kennebec, S. D.

Besides her children she leaves 26 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Gerard was one of the old fashioned, noble mothers, well educated, thus bringing the best influences to her children, a good neighbor and valuable friend.
