OBITUARY

The death of Henry Bauer Tuesday was a distinct shock to the entire community although it was known for several days that his condition was hopeless, having been unconscious since his fall last Wednesday evening.

Mr. Bauer had been failing for the past two months, but his condition was not considered critical until a week ago when he was compelled to go to bed. Tuesday and Wednesday he developed a temperature and was delirious at times. He attempted to come down stairs about seven o’clock Wednesday evening, while Mrs. Bauer was in the furnace room and fell the full length of the stairway in the home. A blood hemorrhage of the brain resulted and he did not regain consciousness. He was taken to a hospital in Council Bluffs, accompanied by his wife, and they were joined there by the daughter, Mrs. Helen Beemer, Thursday. Both were at his side until death came Tuesday evening. His aged mother, who is quite frail, and his brothers have also spent as much time as possible with him.

Carl Henry Bauer, so of Fredrick and Catherine Elizabeth Bauer, was born at Westside, Iowa, July 7th, 1885. When 14 years of age he came to Corning and went to work for his father in the blacksmith shop. At the time of his father’s death he began to see the possibilities of the garage business and devoted his time to this line of business. Twenty years ago he purchased the garage owned by John Mack and he and his brother, Fred, went into partnership. This partnership has survived through the years and the relationship of brothers as partners has tightened the bond of relationship. As some one said, “Where other partners would have clashed, the Bauer Brotthers [Brothers] could always sit down and talk it over”.

Mr. Bauer was married to Lena Wallbridge of Brooks, January 20, 1909. To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Helen Beemer of Sterling, Colorado.

Mr. Bauer is survived by his wife and daughter: his aged mother, Mrs. Fred Bauer, Sr.: two brothers and two sisters, Fred Bauer, Jr., and Mary Romer of Corning, Mrs. Ella Giesler of Faith, South Dakota, and Ralph of Prescott; also many nieces and nephews who were devoted to him, and a host of friends who grieve with the sorrowing family.

Mr. Bauer was a man of quiet mien, reserved in his manner, but a friend to everyone. He was baptized in the German Evangelical church and held to the early teachings of his church throughout his life. His most outstanding characteristics were his great love for his home, his honesty, his keen sense of justice, and his kindly attitude to those about him. He had a keen business mind but thought more about an honesty of purpose than of accumulating money.

Funeral services will be held from the Federated church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by the Rev. A. F. Nelson. Burial will be in Walnut Grove cemetery.
