Mrs. Susan L McGrew, daughter of Elwood and Levisa J. Hollingsworth, was born near Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa November 3, 1865 and came with her parents to Adams County, Iowa in October 1876, where she has since made her home, with the exception of about a year in Nebraska in 1903.
After a lingering illness of many years, she passed from this life at 11 o'clock Tuesday a.m. May 6, 1952 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning which she had entered the day before, being tenderly cared for in the home of her children the past few years.
She was married to Alva T. McGrew, December 12, 1885 at the home of her parents near Carbon, Iowa. Six children were born to this union, Mrs. Maude Kurtz of Prescott; Mrs. Emma Bylander, Des Moines; Mrs. Faye Ansley, Cumberland; James E., Houston, Texas; Roy A. Elliott; and W. Howard of Corning. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Gibson, Donna Texas, Mrs. Ada Neill, Corning, and Mrs. Katie Cochran, Henderson, Colorado; Two sons-in-law, Archie Anstey, Elder Bylander; three daughters-in-law, Esther, Sadie, and Ester A. She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1929.
She was a member of the Methodist Church since early in life and loved to attend services as long as her health permitted. She was a devoted and faithful mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed by her loved ones and friends.
"She has gone on before us
There to be in a home beyond the sky.
No need of sun to light her path
No tear to dim her eye.
Her course is run, the victory's won
And from her trials free, to meet her
Saviour face to face
And spent eternity.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Thursday, May 8, at the Lincoln Center Methodist Church, conducted by Revs. K. J. Bressler and A. Breeling. Interment was made in the Lincoln Center Cemetery near by.
Pall beareres were Frank and Harry Gaskill, Vernie Vogel. Lloyd and Harvey Peterson, and Beryl Roberts. Music was rendered by Mrs. Vern Roberts and Mrs. Bernice Drennan with Mrs. Lucille Evans at the piano.
