David Turvey was born in Licking County, Ohio on December 10, 1829, and lived there until 1853, when he removed to Illinois. He was married three years later to Miss Mary G. Stevenson. The family removed to Lincoln Township where Mr. Turvey died. Twelve children were born to them, six of whom are living, James, D. J., Charles, Mrs. D. T. Embree, Mrs. Callie Sadler, and Mrs. Lizzie Shields. All except Charles live in Lincoln Township or vicinity. Mr. Turvey was an old soldier and one who took a great interest in the G.A.R. work. He enlisted at Amboy, Illinois in 1862 and was mustered out at Nashville three years later. He participated in the battle of Chicamauga and during a part of his service was forage master of the third division fourth corps. He was chaplain of Jacob Miller Post G.A.R. of Briscoe and was buried by the post with military honors.

In Memory of David Turvey
By an answer to the last roll call, Jacob Miller Post has lost by death one of its most valued and esteemed members. Comrade David Turvey, a faithful soldier of the republic, a man who throughout a long and honorable career commanded the respect of all his comrades and of all with whom he came in contact. He was a man who held such views of right and justice to all as endorsed him to his comrades and the example set by him in his daily fife as an honorable, straight, forward, and upright man, and as an indulgent and consistent husband and father is not only worthy of admiration but emulation. We comrades of Jacob Miller Post respect his memory, deplore his death, and we tender his widow and family our condolence in their irreparable loss. Resolved that copy of this be published and a copy be sent to Mrs. David Turvey and family at Hayes, Iowa, also be spread upon the minute book of Jacob Miller Post.
