The community was deeply saddened this week by the death of Mrs. Rhoda Elizabeth Herring, wife of D. W. Herring, which occurred Thursday, December 4, 1930, at her home in North Corning. Mrs. Herring had not been well since 1921, when she suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she never fully recovered. For the past year her strength had failed rapidly and the past few weeks the end has seemed eminent. She slept away peacefully Thursday. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at one-thirty at the Federated church conducted by her pastor, Rev. N. E. Lamely. Interment was made in Prairie Rose Cemetery.
Rhoda Elizabeth Posten, daughter of Joseph and Ellen Posten, was born in Johnson County, Iowa, June 25, 1865, and died December 4, 1930, at the age of 64 years, 5 months, and 9 days. When about six years old she came with her parents to Taylor County, residing near Gravity. She was married to D. W. Herring in Taylor County, October 18, 1883, and the family resided there until December 3, 1918, when they moved to Corning. This has since been their home. Mrs. Herring united with the Christian Church of the Fairview vicinity in 1889 and after moving to Corning placed her membership in the Federated Church. She was always faithful to her religious duties until her failing health made in impossible to attend church.
Mrs. Herring is survived by her devoted husband and six children: Harry, Della Powell, and Lois Sickler of Corning, Bessie Murdock of Clearfield, Mayme Gold of Gravity, Iowa, and Bertha Fleming, who lived in the home place. Three sons preceded her in death, these being, Bertie, who died in 1894, Leo, who passed away on October 28, 1918, and Roscoe, who died November 8, 1918. She is also survived by five brothers and one sister; Gilbert, Eugene, and Ernest of Gravity, D. E. Posten of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and Clifford of San Diego, California, and Maggie Babcock of Alberta Canada. Seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and a large group of friends also mourn the loss of this fine Christian woman. She was of a retiring disposition but always ready to be at service as a good neighbor and as a mother in the home.
