With the passing of William Monroe Peterson, March 31st, 1930, Adams County lost one of it's earlier pioneers, his family being one of the first thirteen families in Adams County. Mr. Peterson had been ill at times for the past three years, but last November he was taken seriously ill and since that time had never recovered his health but had steadily grown worse and endured a great deal of suffering.
Funeral services were held from the one at 1:30 and at the M. E. Church at Mt. Etna at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 2nd, conducted by the former pastor, Z. M. Bressler, assisted by the Rev. Harry Rogers. Interment was made in the Forest Hill Cemetery.
William Monroe Peterson was born in Indiana June 9th, 1853. He was the son of George D. and Sarah Fees Peterson. The family came to Iowa in 1853 stopping first at Burlington and later in the same year coming to Adams County settling near Mt. Etna. Since that time he had lived continuously in the vicinity of Mt. Etna and on the same farm since 1880.
He was married in 1875 to Mary Stover and three sons by this marriage survive him. They are Albert C. and W. D. of Corning and W. L. of Nashua Iowa. The wife died in 1894. In 1907 he was again married to Sarah Stover, who preceded him in death in 1927. He is also survived by two brothers, Sam of Hanford, California and Dr. I. F. of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; and three sisters, Mrs. A. B. Ramsey of Creighton, Nebraska, Mrs. Fannie Prather of Atlantic, Iowa and Mrs. Mary Perry of Mt. Etna vicinity.
Mr. Peterson was a member of the Board of Education for more than thirty years and was twice a member of the Board of Supervisors from his district. He was always interested in the affairs of his community, standing ready to actively sponsor any worthy cause. He had a large acquaintance and commanded the highest respect of all who knew him. His circle of friends was large and have stood loyal through the long years. May grieve with the family in the death of this splendid man who has figured so prominently in the history of the county.
