Mrs. Olive Booe Cummings, eldest daughter of Thomas L. and Orintha E. Booe, was born on a farm in Adams County, northwest of Nodaway, Iowa, January 12th, 1873 and passed away at the Daniels Custodial Home in Corning on December 13, 1959 at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 1 day.
As a child Olive lived on a farm and attended the Cranville School near her home. On May 11, 1898 she was united in marriage to Joseph R. Cummings and they commenced housekeeping in Nodaway, Iowa. In 1906 they moved to Corning, where she lived the rest of her life, except for three years at Stuart, Iowa, where her husband engaged in the hardware business in 1948. Olive and Joseph celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
At the time of her death she was a member of the First Baptist Church, Eastern Star Lodge, Taka Art Club, and the Woman's Relief Corps of Nodaway. She transferred her membership to the latter organization to Nodaway when the lodge in Corning disbanded. She was a member for over 63 years. For many years Olive was a member of the First Presbyterian Church but transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church near her home.
Olive was a great lover of music, nature, and all things connected with gardening and flower raising and one of her most enjoyable pleasures was going on a picnic in the woods. During her earlier years, Olive was very active in church work, lodge work, and civic activities, but in later years gave up most of these due to poor health.
Olive leaves to mourn her passing, two sons and one daughter, John of Corning, Leighton of Boise, Idaho and Eleanor Kelly; one sister, Jane McElroy of Romana, California; one son-in-law, J. W. Kelly; one daughter-in-law, Justine Cummings; three brothers-in-law, and five sisters-in-law; F. Olive was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, and an infant sister and two infant brothers. Olive will be remembered by those who knew her for her ready wit and laughter and untiring help wherever she was needed.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 14 at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church, Coring, Iowa with Rev. B. O. Bradbury and Rev. Virgil Peterson officiating. Music was by John Reigel and Mrs. Joe Cook. Pall bearers were R. W. Medlin, Carl West, Lloyd Leonard, Roswell Darrah, E. J. Larson and Walker Brown.
