Campbell, Marguerite Spidell -
Funeral services for Marguerite Campbell, age 95, of Corning, who died Sunday,
May 3, 2009, at the Kavanaugh Hospice House in Des Moines, will be held Thursday,
May 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home in Corning. Visitation
will be from 10:00 until service time with the family greeting friends from 1:00
until service time. Interment will be held in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Memorials can be given in her name. Memories can be shared with the family at
www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to Roland-Ritchie
Funeral Home of Corning.
Marguerite (Spidell) Campbell was born to Calvin and Bertha Spidell on September
10, 1913 in Pacific Junction, Iowa. She was one of 11 children and was the last
surviving member of her family.
She attended school in Pacific Junction and was involved playing girls basketball.
She graduated in 1930 and moved to Corning, Iowa shortly thereafter working
in private homes until her marriage to Harold L. Campbell. The couple was united
in marriage in Corning, on January 1, 1935 and started farming near Prescott
and surrounding areas until they moved to Corning in 1942. To this union four
children were born, Sharon, Jack, Loren and Shirley.
Marguerite started working outside the home in 1952 clerking at Places Dime
Store, Turners Grocery and at the Corning Hy-Vee until her retirement in 1975.
She enjoyed meeting and serving the public during these times.
Marguerite joined the First Baptist Church of Corning in 1948 and served in
various positions at her church. Attending church was important to her. She
loved her family and for many years enjoyed preparing large meals on Sunday
for her children and grandchildren to enjoy. She was an excellent cook. Her
hobbies included crafts, crocheting, playing cards, reading and socializing with
friends and family. Marguerite relocated to Des Moines to be near family and
resided at Calvin Community in the assisted living unit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold; daughter Sharon;
son Jack, one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.
Survivors include son Loren Campbell wife Dorothy of Independence, MO;
daughter Shirley Frus husband Don of Des Moines, IA; son-in-law Mervin
Walter of Prescott, IA, 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 21
great-great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Calvin Good
Samaritan Fund at 4210 Hickman Road, Des Moines, IA 50310.
Although Marguerite will be greatly missed
her love and inspiration will live on through her family.
