Kenneth W. Hayes, 90, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2011 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8 at Iles Funeral Homes, Dunn's Chapel. Interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
Ken was born in Lenox, Iowa to Raymond and Mary Jane (Jennie) Hayes. He attended AIB Business College and also served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Denman on January 31, 1942. Ken retired as Senior Vice President of Allied Insurance Company after 46 years.
Ken was very active in the Des Moines community, serving as President of Neighbor Housing Services, President of SCORE, Board of Directors of Economic Development for Des Moines, and was active in Kiwanis and SHIIP. He also enjoyed volunteering at First United Methodist Church and Wesley Acres. Ken also taught courses in business plans at DMACC and Hoover He enjoyed spending time participating in his investment club, golfing, traveling, walking, reading history, and touring Iowa.
Ken is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; children, Gary (Jean) Hayes, Pam (Tom) Truesdell, and Steve (Anne) Hayes; grandchildren, Rebecca (Ryan) Langhus and Christopher Hayes; Ryan and Michael Truesdell; Kelli, Scott (Gretchen), Aaron, and Sarah Hayes; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Hayes; and sister, Lois Jean Brashear.
