Alfred Thomas, son of John and Elizabeth Jones Thomas was born on the old home place south of Corning, July 26, 1883 and passed from this life, Wednesday, April 2nd, at the age of 46 years, 8 months, and 6 days.
Alfred had not been well for some time, but his condition was not considered serious. Wednesday morning he was suffering an attack of asthma and a physician was called. He found him about as usual and somewhat improved. At noon he suffered a severe heart attack and grew rapidly worse passing away at about 2:00 o'clock. Both Lige and Elizabeth were at his bedside in his last hours.
He grew to manhood on the farm home, staying with his mother and shouldering the responsibilities of her declining years. After her death in May 1925, he with his sister, Elizabeth continued their duties in the old home, each taking care of the other until death cut him down in the midst of their plans and ambitions.
Alfred was a man of strong character, with a jolly, lovable disposition, always faithful to every task and never shin king any duty. He was always interest in the affairs of his community and was beloved by both old and young, being a special friend of all the children.
He leaves to mourn their loss, two brothers, Lige, who lived near and Fred of Waukesha, Wisconsin, two sisters, Elizabeth, who made her home with him and Mrs. Mary Douglas, Callao, Missouri, a cousin, Griff Jones, who was reared to manhood in the home, five nephews, one niece and many other relatives. His older brother, Daniel preceded him in death last October.
He also leaves a large acquaintance and a host of friends who grove with the loved ones in the death of this splendid man. The family may feel assured that they have the sympathy of the entire community.
The funeral services were held in the home Friday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. V. H. Humphrey of the Fairview Church. Those from a distance attending the funeral were D. L. Thomas, an aged uncle from Lincoln, Nebraska, Fred Thomas from Waukesha, Wisconsin, Mary Douglas of Callso, Missouri, and Henry Feeser, a cousin of Gresham, Nebraska. The body was laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
