Vernon Samuel Crisp

Vernon Crisp was born in Brooks, Iowa on November 7, 1913. He had two older brothers, Floyd and Bill and one sister, Pearl. He attended school in Brooks and Quincy. After his schooling, he worked in the coal mines in Carbon and spent time traveling between Iowa and Illinois at various jobs, staying with his sitter Peal, who had moved there with her husband Cap Hoselton.
He met Dorothy Sprague in Lenox and they were married in October 28, 1939 and moved with her two small sons, Fred and Russell to Prairie View, Illinois. They returned to Lenox and their daughter Evelyn was born in 1944. Vernon served in the Armed Forces for two years. While in the service he was wounded in Germany and sent to England to recover and then to the Philippines. After his discharge, they settled in Illinois and had a son Ronald in 1946. They returned to a farm north of Lenox for a few years and returned to Illinois where they remained until his retirement in 1974, moving back to Lenox.
Vernon and Dorothy are members of the Church of the Brethren in rural Lenox.
Vernon enjoyed gardening, reading and watching television.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He died on Tuesday, August 4, 1987, at the age of 73 years.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Lenox, daughter Evelyn and husband Ed Nelson of Brooks; son Ronald Crisp and wife Sarah of Red Oak; two step-sons, Fred Sprague and wife Roberta of Omaha, Nebraska; Russell Spage of Mundelein, Illinois; nine grandchildren (with triplet grandchildren expected in October); sister Pearl Hoselton of Mundelein, Illinois, several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 6, 1987, 10:30 a.m. at the Coen-Beaty Funeral HOme in Lenox, Iowa with Rev. Elmer West officiating. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, with military rites by Parkinson Post #250.
