Mary Ella Duer passed away December 17, 1932 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clara Adams on West 19th Street, with whom she had made her home for the past six years. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Corning, Rev. E. E. Menoher of Mt. Ayr in charge. Interment was made at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Mary Ella Hicks Duer, daughter of Gilbert and Amanda Hicks, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania June 4, 1857 and died December 17, 1932 at the age of 75 years, 6 months, and 13 days. She came to Cedar County, Iowa in 1861. She taught school in Adams County for five years and was married to William Townsend Duer on November 21, 1878. To this union six children were born, Clara Myrtle, deceased, Alice Mabel, now Mrs. Chas Adams, Nellie Blanche, deceased; Ella Frances, now Mrs. Ella F. , John Raymond, Bradwell, Sask, Canada, William Carl of Kansas City, Missouri. She is also survived by one brother, Gilbert of Cromwell, Iowa. Two brothers, Alfred and Frank P. Duer and two sisters, Mrs. Clara Kuhney and Mrs. Katherine Clary preceded her in death. She has ten grandchildren.
Mrs. Duer has lived in Adams County sixty years, the last 23 years in Corning. She was a member of the Episcopalian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, later transferring to Corning, Iowa. Also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Corning, Iowa.
