Enoch Elijah Thomas, son of John and Elizabeth Jones Thomas, was born April 13, 1881 on a farm south of Corning, and lived most of his life in that neighborhood. He departed this life at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, August 2, 1976 after a short illness. He was very proud of his 95 years, 3 months, and 19 days. His scatted family attended his birthday parties whoever possible.
Lige was married to Perle Miliken August 2, 1911. They became parents of a daughter, Harriet, who died at birth; a son, John Miliken Thomas, who preceded his parents in death on May 20, 1969; and another son, Russell Elijah Thomas, a resident of Brussels, Belgium. Other survivors include his daughters-in-law, Lucille and Ruth Thomas, his grandchildren, Allen Mae Dougall, Carolyn Harvey, Ann Nolte, Rebeca Louise, and John Noeding Thomas; 9 great-grandchildren; and his sister-in-law Mildred Thomas; besides much loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Perle on May 7, 1976, his parents; two sisters, Mary Douglas and Elizabeth Heatherington; his brother, Dan Alfred and Fred; a cousin, Grill Jones who lived in his home.
He was a member of the Fairview Church, a 50 year member of instruction Lodge #275, Emblem Chapter #64, Order of the Eastern Star. He was county supervisor for a number of years and one of his pleasures was horse trading. He has been a resident of Colonial Manor Nursing Home for the past five years.
Funeral services were held at the Larkin-Roland Funeral Home in Corning, August 4, at 1 p.m. conducted by Rev. Howard Wells. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Instruction Lodge #275, A. F. & A. M.
Music was furnished by Donna Peckham organist and Ruth Tranbarger, vocalist. Pall bearers were Dean Leonard, Edward Chappell, Keith Hadley, Russell Vogel, Oscar Lynam, and Glen Septer. Flower bearers were Neva Vogel, Gladys Bycroft, Pauline Hadley, and Ruth Goldsmith.
