John Thomas was born April 16, 1838 in South Wales and died at his home in Jasper Township, Adams County, Iowa, June 4, 1896. He came to this country with his parents in 1853, locating in Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
In 1862, he enlisted in the 87th Wisconsin Regiment and served his adopted country as a soldier until the close of the war. On his return from the war he remained in Wisconsin until 1871, when he removed to Adams County, Iowa where he lived until he was called to his heavenly home.
John Thomas was a good man; the writer was his pastor for two years, and ever found him a consistent Christian.
"Blessed are the dead, which die in the Lord."
January 7, 1865 he married Elizabeth Jones, who made him a faithful helpmate. He leaves his devoted wife and six children to mourn their loss, but his gain.
For two years I knew him as his pastor and knew him only to love him and highly respect him as a Christian.
He was an honored member of Liewellyn Post No. 324, G.A.R., was buried according to the ritual of the order in the cemetery south of Corning.
The large attendance of his neighbors at the funeral attested as to his high standing among them as a neighbor and friend.
