The death of Harrison Winchester Means, aged 82 years, 9 months, occurred Tuesday, September 11, 1946. He was born December 12, 1863 in Warren County, Illinois to Isaac Oscar Means and Susanna Ellen Snyder. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Isabelle Olds, March 11, 1895. He was the father of 10 children, six sons, and 4 daughters. Preceding him in death were one daughter, Ruby, one and half years, and a son, Otha, who passed away two years ago in Creston.
He spent his childhood days in Illinois, moving to Adams County, Iowa in 1880. Then to Adair County in 1901, where he lived 42 years near Fontanelle. He spent the last 4 years of his live in Adams County.
He was a farmer, an industrious, upright citizen, a Christian who loved his fellow men. His motto was to do unto others as he would have others do unto him.
He was a loving husband and father. He not only raised his own children, but several others and nothing pleased him more than to have them and his grand children and great grand children around him.
Those left to mourn his death are his wife and children, Cliff of Fontanelle, Oscar, Clyde, and Shelburn of Corning, Wilford at home, Mrs. Zoah Mangels of Creston, Mrs. Daisy Webb of Fontanelle, and Mrs. Beatrice Duckett of Des Moines. Thirteen grandchildren, one brother, Melvin Means of Creston, and six great grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Fontanelle Friday p.m. at 2 o'clock and was conducted by Rev. Donald Charles of San Francisco, California, assisted by Rev. C. J. Henderson, pastor of the church.
Special songs were rendered by Mr. Fred Myers of Lyman and Mr. and Mrs. Claud Swage of Fontanelle.
The pall bearers were his 5 sons and one grand son, Robert Means.
A large number of relatives and friends were present. Those from a distance were, Mrs. Tom Jarvis of Breckenridge, Minnesota, Mrs. Daisy Grosbeck of Oakland, California, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Wilson of Jackson, Tennessee, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Olds of Lydon, Minnesota, Mrs. Pearl Robinson, Mrs. Harold Cooper, Guy Cooper, of Onawa, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Olds, Mrs. Virgil Carter, Mrs. Evelyn Marvis of Gothenberg, Ill, and grandson, Fred Mangels of Cincinnati, Ohio.
