The sudden death of George Neal McPherren early Saturday morning was a great shock to his family and friends. Mr. McPherren and his wife had recently returned from a very pleasant visit to Kansas city and the day before his death visited in the home of a daughter in corning and had seemed in better health than usual. He was taken ill about midnight Saturday morning but was able to be up and around feeling only a slight discomfort. After feeling better, he and his wife decided to go back to bed and had been lying down only a few moments when Mrs. McPherren realized that he was not breathing normally and sprang out of bed to find him dying. Funeral services were held Monday at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Breeling of Grant, an old friend of the family, assisted by Rev. A. M. Eastman of Corning. Interment was made in the Lincoln Center Cemetery.
George Neal McPherren was born at Sunbeam, Illinois, October 20, 1850 and died at his home in Corning, Saturday morning, November 22, 1930, at the age of eighty years, one month and two days. He came to Iowa with his parents in the year of 1857 and settled on a farm five miles north of Corning.
March 5, 1870, he was married to Sarah Katherine Miller and they settled on a farm in Lincoln Township and lived there until eleven years ago when they moved to Corning which has since been their home. To this union were born ten children, a son Earl dying in infancy, a daughter, Belle at the age of 10 years. The living children are Mrs. Onie Abbey and Lloyd of north of Corning, W. J. of Villisca, Mrs. Jessie Vogel and Mrs. Essie O'Day of Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. Iva White of Sioux City, Floyd of Shambaugh, and Bert of Massena. Besides his widow and children he is survived by three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Fannie Lincoln of Exira, Iowa, Mrs. Mary Zyons of Corning, and Mrs. Cena Hicks of Cromwell, and John Pherren of Brooks, also twenty-six grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of friends who have loved and admired him for his many excellent qualities. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a citizen of the highest quality.
