Clare Irene Cummings, adopted daughter of Simon and Elizabeth Cline Arnold, was born June 4, 1891 in Decorah, Iowa, and passed away at her home in Corning June 26, 1984.
When six weeks old she moved with the Arnold family to Pocahontas County and lived there until she was ten years of age, when they moved to Mount Etna, Iowa. She attended school there.
On Jan. 28, 1912 she married Jacob Thomas. They made their home in Mount Etna until Jacob's death July 2, 1934. Corning has been her home since her marriage to Perry Cummings Jan. 30, 1936. After Perry's death Aug. 5, 1961 her brother, Walter Arnold, made his home with her until his death.
She was a member of the Mount Etna Church of the Brethren and was an active, faithful worker as long as her health permitted. Her charities were many and one of her greatest pleasures was helping others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jacob and Perry and three foster brothers, Eldon, Walter and Dorhrman Arnold.
Survivors include nieces, Eleanor Kelly, Fondeen Westphal, Gladys Barnes Margery Dotson and a nephew, Tom Beckwith.
Rev. Elmer West conducted services at the GoodwinLindsay Funeral Home June 29 at 1:30 p.m., with burial
in the Mount Etna Cemetery.
Errna Fuller was organist and Merrill Sparks, soloist. Casket bearers were John Fees, Ricardo Sauro. Vernon Boswell, Dallas Hickman, Byron Stanley and Bill Wheatley. Honorary bearers were Warren Johnston, Darrel Allison, Randy and Russell Ramsey, Albert Hedinger and Kenneth Roland.
A memorial has been established to the Rosary Hospital in Corning.
