Fred Kennedy was born July 1, 1886 to Edward and Sarah Shipley of Nodaway, Iowa and passed away December 6, 1974 in Corning, Iowa at the age of 88 years, 5 months, and 5 days.
He was the ninth of twelve brothers and sisters, all preceding him in death except brother, Phil of Corning and sisters, Winifred McClelland and Nellie of Villisca.
On July 5, 1913, Fred and Margaret Simons lived in were married. For six years they Corning where he was a rural mail carrier. In 1919 the family moved to Cushing, Nebraska where Fred began farming, which he continued until his retirement in 1955. Most of his life was spent in Adams and Taylor counties.
In 1963, Fred and Margaret celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an open house for family and friends at the home of their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hossman in Villisca.
Fred is survived by his wife, Margaret and their three children, Pat of Red Oak, Kathlyn Hossman of Villisca, and Jane Nash of Grinnell; by their mates, Darlene Kennedy, Glen Hossman, and R. Jay Nash, by nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
Fred was an independent man with an Irish sense of humor. He had great pride in his family. Their visits brought him much pleasure and each one always felt welcome at Granddad and Grandma Kennedy's. It was "going home" wherever Fred and Margaret lived. Each member of the family knew he had a special place and was a special person to Granddad and his approval and enjoyment made each visit a joyful one.
Funeral services were held at the Sutphen Funeral Home in Villisca, Sunday, December 8 at 2 p.m. with Rev. James King officiating. Interment was in the Nodaway Cemetery.
Pallbearers were O. S. Thummel, Robert D. Brown, Glen I. Hossman, William I. Kennedy, Jeff Brown, and Dale Nelson. Flower bearers were Mr. and Mrs. K. K. Kennedy and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Moore. Music was provided by Mrs. Quincy Dunn. Mrs. Helen Penwell was in charge of the register.
