Arthur Westlake, oldest son of Jefferson and Grace Haney Westlake, was born June 15, 1875 on a farm two miles south of Grant, Iowa and passed away at the Rosary Hospital, Friday September 19, 1952 at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 4 days, after a serious illness of two years. During this time, his suffering seemed more than he could bear. Most of his last year was spent in hospitals in Corning, and Omaha, his wife, children, doctors and nurses doing all they could do to relieve him.
On May 26, 1899, at Red Oak, Iowa, he was married to Miss Myrtle Clark of Grant, Iowa. To this union nine children were born, Ethel Shipley, Nodaway, Irene Cochran, Omaha, Lawrence, Floyd of Corning; Harold and Donald of Brooks; Grace Medders, Omaha, Nebraska, Maxine Wilkinson, Stratton, Nebraska, and Olin E., who was killed in a tractor accident, May 1, 1924
There are thirty-three living and two deceased grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren, four sons-in-law, five daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren married; a brother Jesse Westlake of Lenox,, a sister, Mrs. Belle Hardisty of Carbon; three nieces, Mrs. Helen Vogel, Messena; Mrs. Bess Young, and Mrs. James O'Riley, Corning and a nephew, William Westlake, Lenox. One brother, John and a sister, Lucy, preceded him in death.
Mr. Westlake lived in Montgomery County until 1905 when he moved to Adams County. On January 1, 1909 he and his family moved to a farm two miles south of Brooks, which was the family home until two years ago when he and his wife moved into Corning. while not active of a member of any church, he attended the Methodist Churches of Iveyville and Brooks.
On May 6, 1940, Mr. and Mrs. Westlake celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their farm home and last May their 53rd at the home of their daughter, Grace and husband of Carbon.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church of Corning, Monday, September 22, 1952. Pall bearers were Loren Fuller, Albert Lung, Clifford Clark, Chester Jackson, Everett Straight, and Jack Aundor. Services were conducted by Rev. Frank Jacobs, burial was in Prairie Rose Cemetery.
