Frances Elwood Myers
Corning suffered a distinct loss in the passing of Frances Elwood Myers lost Tuesday. Mr. Myers had been ill only a few days and on Saturday he was taken so much worse, that he was taken to the Clarinda Municipal Hospital where he grew rapidly worse and death resulting from pneumonia. Tuesday evening a sad circumstance in connection with his death was the fact that his brother Sam, from Canada, arrived, not knowing his brother was ill and found him too ill for a visit to be any comfort.
Francis Elwood Myers, son of Jonathan E. and Nancy Elizabeth Purdum Myers, was born in Brown County, Ohio, December 28th, 1866 and died March 31, 1942, at 6:30 p.m. at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital where he had been taken on the previous Saturday. Death had resulted from pneumonia. He was 75 years, 3 months, and 3 days old.
The deceased came with his family to Adams County during December 1881, and was married to Eva Crowell October 1883. To this union five children were born, three of whom are deceased. The living children are Mrs. Grace Fowler of Helena, Montana, Glenn Myers of Corning. The deceased daughters are Mrs. Gertrude White, Mrs. Hazel Bray, and Mrs. Cora Bunting; Mrs. Myers died at Stringtown in 1906. Mr. Myers is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Henry Shuler of Owatuma and Mrs. Emma Florence Howard of Clarinda; one brother Sam Myers of Meadow Lake, Canada, and 11 children, one brother, Emmet Myers and a sister Mrs. Ann Hummell are deceased.
Mr. Myers was a member of the Methodist Church and his kindly attitude toward all and his deep reverence indicated that his Christian spirit and religious convictions were deep seeded and sincere. Perhaps no man in Corning had more friends nor fewer enemies. During his early life he was a farmer, but for many years he has been in the produce business in Corning and his integrity, his pleasing personality, and his keen business ability brought him success in both lines. Recently he retired from the produce business. He has made his home for some time with his son, Glenn and family, and will be greatly missed from the home circle as well as by the community, where he was respected and loved by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 3, at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Corning, Iowa. rev. Walter Morgan of Creston, Iowa, was in charge, assisted by Rev. F. G. Barnes, pastor of the Corning Methodist Church. Music was furnished by Mrs. Russell Roland and John Riegel, with Mrs. William Sparbee, accompanist. Pall bearers were Thurman Allen, Ira Jackson, Burr Long, William Kelly, Albert Lund, and Dr. J. W. McCraftin. Burial was in Prairie Rose Cemetery.
