Death of Mrs. A. R. Purdum
Mrs. A. R. Purdum died at her home just east of town, Saturday night, Nov. 5. The death came as the close of a very long and painful illness. She was taken ill on Christmas day last; and since March last had been, confined to her bed. The trouble is diagnostics; by the physicians as cancer of the liver, with complications which added to the seriousness of the disease. From the first of March she had been sinking gradually. On Saturday morning, early,it became apparent that death was near. Her strength rapidly gave way, and she last talked rationally during the morning of that day. She then passed
into consciousnesses, and slept peacefully away, dying: with no pain; whatever. The death though not unexpected was a shock to many friends in this community. She had lived here over 12 years, coming from Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Purdum were married 12 years ago. She left one child, by a former husband, Madison Smith, living: at Oquaka, Illinois. On account of illness, Mr.
Smith was unable to come to the funeral, which was held Monday forenoon, from the home. There was a large gathering of friends, for few persons would have been more deeply mourned; than Mrs. Purdum. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Dr. Moulton, who paid a beautiful tribute to the memory of the departed. She had been for the entire term of her residence in Adams county a member of the Congregational church, was an earnest Christian, and a woman devoted to her family and
friends. The interment was at the Prairie Rose cemetery, in the family lot.
