Naven, Claudine Elsie Maurer - Claudine Elsie Naven, 81, Shenandoah, died Monday, June 26, 2006, following a battle with cancer. Born March 20, 1925 in Beatrice, NE, to Claude and Minnie (Kelley) Maurer, Claudine grew up in Des Moines, IA where she graduated from Roosevelt High School. Following high school she underwent training in health care and with Braniff Airlines, returning to Des Moines where she later married Dean H. Naven on November 6, 1948. In 1950 the couple spent two years in Wiesbaden, Germany where Dean was attached to the U.S. Air Force post war effort. Upon returning stateside and following her husband's radio broadcasting career, Claudine made homes in Des Moines, Council Bluffs, Shenandoah, Fremont, NE, Sioux City and Fort Dodge, IA.
While in Shenandoah, 1953-1966, Claudine was active in St. John's Episcopal Church, Shenandoah Garden Club, Shen Artists, Southwest Iowa Theatre Group and PEO Chapter JA. In Fort Dodge she put her artistic talents to work as owner/designer of Naven Draperies. Claudine was involved in numerous cultural and political activities while in Fort Dodge, including senior warden of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Fort Dodge Chapter of the League of Women Voters, Webster County Democratic Chair and candidate for Fort Dodge City Council. She was a supportive and loving mother to her four children, an avid cheerleader for their interests and careers.
Following the 1995 death of her husband she returned to Shenandoah in 1996 to be near two of her four children. Claudine is survived by her daughters Tamara Murray and husband Todd of Carmichael, CA, Jeri Naven-McGinnis and husband Art of Shenandoah, IA, Kim Gee and husband Gil of Farragut, IA, and son Jeffrey Naven and special friend Michon Menke of Thousand Oaks, CA; eight grandchildren Bryan Murray, Sacramento, CA, Scott Murray and Matthew Murray, Carmichael, CA, Allison Lyman, New York City, Aaron Lyman, St. Louis, MO, Jason Lyman, Farragut, IA, Katharine McGinnis and Connor McGinnis, Shenandoah, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter Elizabeth Lyman and siblings Raymond Maurer, Helen Tyler and Jamae Finnell.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, July 8, 2006, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Shenandoah. Celebrant was Rev. Tim Vann. Organist was Mary Beth Gowing. Vocalists were Allison Kelley Lyman and Katharine Naven McGinnis. Special music was "Amazing Grace" and "Song Of Farewell". Attending the memory register was Sherry Hambsch. Caring for flowers were the ladies of the Shenandoah Garden Club. Ushers were Connor McGinnis and Matthew Murray. Inurnment will be held at a future date in Prairie Rose Cemetery near Corning, IA. Claudine donated her body to the University of Iowa for medical research. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements
