John Cox, Sr, was born May 17, 1838 in the county of Durham, England. He came to this country in 1863 and located at LaSalle, Illinois. He was married to Miss Hannah Wilkinson, October 4, 1865 and to them was born six children, five of whom are living, three girls and two boys. The family moved to Iowa in 1879 and located on the farm eight miles south of Corning, which place has ever since been their home. Mr. Cox has been blind for about 20 years and has been in failing health for some time. Death came quite suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday morning, April 20, 1905, at 5 o'clock. His age was 66 years, 11 months, and 3 days. Besides his wife and children, he leaves one sister in England and one brother in Colorado. Our departed friend was a man of strong faith in God. He was associated with the church in England and with the Evangelical church in the United States. Mr. Cox was an early settler of Taylor County and did his part in developing the country. He has a large circle of warm friends and neighbors who speak well of him and who will miss him. He was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, a loyal citizen. He has laid down the burden of life and gone home. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Fairview Christian Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. W. Ackley and the body laid to rest in the Prairie Rose Cemetery attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the entire community.
