Willard Perry Howard was born near Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri, August 29, 1846 and departed this life at his home in Nodaway, November 26, 1927, aged 81 years, 2 months, and 27 days.
Mr. Howard came to Iowa when but a young man 21 years of age, and has resided here ever since that time. He was united in marriage to Mahala S. Rains and to this union six children were born, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. H. H. Smice, Villisca, Miss Cora Howard, of Nodaway, Mrs. L. H. Hammond, and Mrs. Etta Hammond of Parnell, Missouri, Mrs. Ray Brown of Eugene, Oregon, and William Howard of Omaha, Nebraska.
Mrs. Howard, his wife, departed this life August 27, 1889, leaving the responsibility of the rearing of the family of small children entirely to her husband, which duty he performed in a most self-sacrificing and commendable manner. Mr. Howard was converted to Christian faith and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in early manhood and always endeavored to live a Christian life. He leaves to mourn his departure in addition to the son and daughters above motioned, 25 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren also a host of old acquaintances and friends.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church conducted by Rev. J. W. Ellis, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. and interment was made in the Nodaway Cemetery beside his wife. Pallbearers were George Ross, E. E. Cramer, Rob Strain, Bud Wallace, Chris Kohil, Steven Arnott.
Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kerr, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Howard, all of Maryville, Missouri. J. M. Howard and son Walter of Savannah, Missouri, Eliza Carroll and children of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hammond and children, Mrs. Etta Hammond and son Everett and Leslie Miller all of Parnell, Missouri; Ben Adams of New Market, and Willie Howard of Omaha.
