Death of Mrs. W. S. Hefling
Died on Saturday morning, January 11, 1896, after an illness of sixteen days of typhoid fever. Lydia Harlow Hefling, wife of W. S. Hefling.
Lydia Harlow was born near Nodaway, this county, May 11, 1861, the daughter of James W. and Martha Harlow. She grew to young womanhood in Brooks, where she was married January 1, 1883 to W. S. Hefling, then a teacher in our schools. Mr. Hefling, being an attorney was soon admitted to the bar and removed to Corning, where his peculiar financial abilities were recognized and he was elected president of the National Bank of Corning to succeed the late D. S. Sigler.
To Mr. and Mrs. Hefling was born a little son in January 1889 which was only spared to them a few days. since then their home has been made happy by the birth of a little daughter Haley, four years old and a son sixteen months old, unnamed.
To these bright little children who are bereft of a mother's love and a mother's care and to the grief stricken husband who hast knew of his good wife's worth, the sympathy of every heart in Corning is extended. We share their sorrows.
Mrs. Hefling was of a modest, unassuming disposition. The society and friendship of her neighbors was dearly prized by her, but dearer still was the home which was the entire object of her devotion. She loved her husband and her little ones and bent her life's energies toward enhancing their happiness in the exclusion of all else. Her intimate friends attest her Christian graces and revere her memory.
Mrs. Hefling leaves to mourn her mother and the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Emma Fryer, Mesdames J. M. (Mary) Tucker and Mrs. J. P. (Phoebe) Tucker, and Elizabeth Bryson of Brooks, William Harlow, Mrs. Joseph P. (Martha) Bosisto of Iveyville.
Funeral services were held from her late home Sunday afternoon by Rev. W. O. Allen, assisted by Reverends J. A. Lovejoy and T. D. Ewing, of the Presbyterian Church.
The interment was made in Brooks Cemetery, It was a largely attended funeral. The members of the Corning bar of which the bereaved husband is an honored member, and the attending physicians attested their deep sympathy by marching in a body to the residence. On Saturday morning in memory of the deceased wife of their colleague, the bar passed the following resolutions:
RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT OF THE ADAMS COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION.
Whereas, by a decree of Divine Providence the Angel of Death has visited the home of our friend, associate, and companion, W. S. Hefling, and taken therefrom the one whom place can never be filled in the person of his beloved wife, leaving the husband and two children to walk alone through life:
Therefore, be it by the Bar Association of Adams County, Iowa.
Resolved that we deeply and truly sympathize with our brother, W. S. Hefling and his family in their deep affection and be it further
Resolved, that the District Court of Adams County, Low be requested to order the resolutions to be entered upon the permanent records in the office of the Clerk of the District Court that a copy of the same be sent to the bereaved family and we therewith communicate one sympathy and heartfelt condolence on account of the sad and irreparable loss.
