Haviland, Elizabeth Gourd -
Obituary
Elizabeth Gourd Haviland, daughter of Wm and Mary Ann Gourd was born in England, July 31, 1865. She came with her parents to America when she was three years old. Their first home was in Illinois, but after a few years they came to Adams county where she lived the remainder of her life.

On Feb 3, 1887 she was married to Theodore Haviland. They established their home on a farm two miles northeast of Corning and lived there until 1920 when they moved to Fifth Street in Corning. They were the parents of three children, Edith, Everett and Erma. Her husband, Everett and Edith preceded her in death. Erma, Mrs Orville Bassett, lives in Lenox.

When a small girl she joined the Methodist Church and was an active member of the Church, the Friends Sunday School class and the Woman’s Society of Christian Service. She was honored on her 94th birthday with a life membership in the Woman’s Society of Christian Service. She was a member of the Queen City and Taka Art Club.

She became ill on Wednesday, Sept 9 and entered Rosary hospital. She had a heart attack and passed away Sept 14 at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 14 days.

Besides her daughter Erma she is survived by 2 sons-in-law Lyndon Young and Orville Bassett of Lenox, 4 grandchildren: Iva Shawler, Lenox; Belma Hartman of St. Joseph, Mo., Leola Wurster, Renton, Wash. and Leon Bassett, Syracuse, N Y; 6 great grandchildren: Larry, Furene and Lynette Shawler, Janelle Wurster, Terry Hartman
and Johnny Bassett and several nieces.

She was brave in spirit, pure of soul, unselfish and kind. Also devoted to her church. She will be greatly missed by her family, her many friends and neighbors, but her life was a fine example of Christian living to all who knew her.
