John R. Sullivan, son of Elijah & Sarah Julian Sullivan, pioneer resident of Washington Township was born in a log cabin April 29, 1857 & departed this life at his home southeast of Bridgewater Jan. 17,1950 at the age of 92 years, 8 months & 19 days.
He was the last of the family of 4 children. His sister Millie J. Moar & brothers Draper & Isaac preceded him in death.
The 1st school he attended was the 1st school building made of lumber in the township. The lumber was sawed by the 1st sawmill in Adair County. The sawmill was owned by Thomas Johnson who was the1st settler in Adair County.
On April 2, 1882 he was united in marriage to Matilda C. Megeath. They began life together on a farm. To this union 5 children were born. Two children preceded him in death a son Clyde in 1884 & a daughter Bertha Michael in 1938, also his wife in 1939.
He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter Mrs. Ada Moats of Fontanelle, a daughter Miss Grace & a son Lyle at home, 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, numerous relatives & a host of friends.
He was faithfully & devotedly cared for by his daughter Grace, son Lyle & a grandson Malcolm Moats. No task was too heavy, no sacriface too great for them to cheer or lesson his suffering.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for over 50 years. In his earier life hewas Assessor of Washington Township for 15 years. He has resided on the same farm for 62 years & was a resident of Washington Township longer than any other person. He was very active in politics until his handicap prevented him in beng away from home. On April 24, 1934 he suffered the loss of a lower limb & has been in a wheel chair foralmost 16 years.
He was devoted to the welfare ofthose he loved. He derived his greatest enjoyment in doing forothers & was always to be found where he was most needed. Surely the world was made better by thelife he lived. And this closed the life that in so far as is humanly possible was devoted to the welfare of those he loved his family, friends & the community in general.
Funeral services were held at Mr. Sullivan's late home on Friday at 2p.m. with the Rev. Boone paster of the Bridgewater Church of Christ was in charge of the services.
