Donald Leonard Kinney, son of Leonard and Margaretha (Wahe) Kinney, was born December 26, 1914, in Adair County, Iowa. He passed away December 13, 2004, at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield at the age of 89.
Donald grew up on a farm in Adair County, near Canby and attended rural school at Walnut Township No. 9. On June 29, 1945, he was united in marriage to Lottie Leeper.
He farmed his entire life, near Canby in Adair County. Upon retirement he and Lottie moved to northern Minnesota, living on a lake near Tenstrike, finally moving back to Iowa when he could no longer enjoy the outdoors. His last years were spent at the Good Samaritan Home in Fontanelle where he was known as grandpa to all.
He loved farming and enjoyed hunting, fishing, animals and family gatherings. He so loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren, teasing them and making them smile. He loved to tell about how farming was “back then” and visiting with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Virgil; and a grandson, Shawn Erick Kinney, in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Lottie of Casey; three sons, Leonard and wife Dorothy of Atlantic, James and wife Connie of Fremont, Nebraska; David and wife Kathy of Wagner, South Dakota; and daughter Betty and husband Randall Handley of Waukee; 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren with two more due in the spring; a sister, Maisel Christensen of Casey; three sisters-in-law, Lettie Barnes of Guthrie Center, Lorraine Anschutz of Anita; Lena Madsen of Indianola; a brother-in-law, Leonard Leeper and wife Frances of Franklin, Indiana; many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Services December 17, 2004. Burial in Canby Cemetery.
