Lloyd L.Guthrie 94, died Wednesday Aug.27,2003. He was a native of Casey.
Lloyd LeRoy Guthrie was born Sept.27,1908, in Adair County near Casey, the son of Jessie J. and Daisy McNally Guthrie. He grew up in Adair County and Casey where he attended rural schools and Casey Public School. He graduated from Casey High School. He then worked in the area.
He was married Feb.29, 1932, to Elva Allenne Myers at Bethany, Mo. They lived in Des Moines where he operated a service station and then worked for Lawrence Real Estate. When World War 2 started, he moved to Mo. and Kansas where he helped in the construction of Army bases and defense plants.
Following the war they farmed in Kansas before returning to Iowa in 1950. He farmed in the Casey area and then in the Audubon and Gray areas. In 1957, they moved to the Washington D.C. area where he worked on construction. His work there included the Smithsonion Institution, the Washington Cathedral, and the Kennedy Home. He also lived on the Woodlawn Plantation and worked for the Natinal Historical Society.
They moved back to Iowa in 1971 and he worked as a carpenter, delivered the Des Moines Register for several years, did woodworking in his spare time and enjoyed gardening. He had been a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and Methodist Men, and had been a member of the International Carpenter's Union in Des Moines and Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Elva Arlene in 1984; 1 brother Everett Guthrie and 1 sister Geraldine Petersen.
Survivors include 3 sons Lewis of Stuart; Carl of California; and Lawrence of Guthrie Center and 1 daughter Opal Rice of Stuart; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister Cleopha Hager of Casey; nieces; nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon Aug.29, at the United Methodist Church in Casey, conducted by Pastor Bob Kirsten. Janna Nelson was the organist. Honorary pallbearers were Greg Guthrie, Ryan Guthrie, Justin Guthrie, Robert Rice, David Rice, Peggy Garrett and Jo Gumm. Interment of remains was in Oakwood Cemetery.
